About Running Stream

Family Farm
Our story dates back to 1688, when the first French Huguenots arrived in the Cape of Good Hope, of which one of them was Gideon Malherbe. In 1894 a 7th generation descendent (also named Gideon) bought the farm Running Stream. Today we are the 13th generation of Malherbe’s in South Africa with the 6th generation treasuring this small piece of land.

Hand Crafted Wines
Harvesting is done by hand, in the early morning hours to ensure the grapes reach the Cellar at optimal temperatures. The grapes are then de-stemmed, crushed and only the free-run juice is used for further wine production. Our wines undergo natural fermentation with minimal interference and is stirred on the fine lees once a week. After 6 months of ageing in Stainless steel tanks, the wine undergoes its first filtration during the mobile bottling run. Each bottle is then waxed and labelled by hand.
History of Winery
Nestled at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains, is where you will find our picturesque 365ha family farm overlooking the valley. Living harmoniously with nature, the greater majority of the land has been left untouched, boasting with indigenous fauna and flora whilst a mere 25 hectares is under vines and 2 hectares covert by fruit trees. The families long standing motto is to never take too much from the ground. The grapes from our farm are sold to a big cooperative cellar but over the generations, making some wines "for own consumption" has always been one of the activities that comes with harvest season. As our family's history plays a big role in our lives, we took it upon ourselves to be the next generation to officially continue the longstanding tradition of wine making. This is where in 2017 our first Red wine came to life and in 2019, the Running Stream Chardonnay was born.
